Speid, Robert, d. 1793

Robert Speid was born in Ardovie, Angus, Scotland and owned the estate of Ardovie. He married Christian Grierson and they had no children. Robert died in 1793. The estate was inherited by another Robert Speid. He was married to Isobel Hall and had six children including; James Speid, John Speid, and Henry Speid. Robert died in 1846 and the estate was inherited by his three sons.

Speid-Motyer (family)

Arthur Theodore Speid was born in 1882 in Montreal, Que. to Henry Speid (of Ardovie) and Helen Sievwright. Around 1893, the family moved to Lennoxville, Que. Arthur T. was well educated, a teacher at Bishop's University, served two terms as Mayor of Lennoxville, and involved in local theatre. He married Mary White in 1912 and had three daughters; Janet Speid-Motyer (1919-2012), Catharine (Speid) Bensley (1915-2009), and Lorna (Speid) Stewart. Around 1919, Arthur purchased Uplands from Canon Archibald Campbell and his wife Julia (nee Paddon) and remodelled it. He passed away in 1974, followed by Mary in 1979.

Janet Speid continued to live in the family home until 1987, when she and Catharine sold it to the Lennoxville-Ascot Historical and Museum Society and the Town of Lennoxville. Janet Speid married Arthur John Motyer in 1955 and they had two children; Dr. Michael Motyer and Gillian Allen (Motyer). Arthur Motyer was born in 1925 in Hamilton, Bermuda. He attended Mount Allison University and furthered his studies at Oxford. He returned to Canada, where he taught English and Drama at Bishop's University from 1950-70. While at Bishop's, he led the developement of Centennial Theatre. Arthur died the 23 June 2011.

Henry (family)

Charles Stewart Henry was born in Hatley Township in 1820 to Samuel Stewart, a farmer, and his wife, Esther Bacon. He studied watchmaking in Montreal and then returned to Lennoxville to establish a watchmaking business with a small machine shop in the back. In 1846, he married Cynthia Bowen (ca. 1820-1901). They had four children together: George (1847-1908), Charles (1852-1853), Ella (1855) and Katherine (a.k.a. Katie) Ellen (1856-1934). Charles Henry died in 1901 and is buried in Malvern Cemetery.

George Henry worked as a watchmaker at the Waltham Watch Company in the United States as a young man but returned to Lennoxville to work in the family business: C. S. Henry & Son. Later, he lived and worked as a watchmaker in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Around the later 1890s, George and his family moved back to Lennoxville, where he continued to make watches until his death in 1908. George married Elizabeth Burrill (ca. 1849-1901) and they had two children: Charles William (b. 1876) and Edward George (b. 1877).

Dr. Edward (a.k.a. Ned) G. Henry received a B.A. from Bishop's University and went on to receive his M.D. from McGill University in 1905. Around 1906, he established his medical practice in Lennoxville. In 1937, Edward moved his practice to Gould, Quebec and retired in 1959. With his first wife, Ethel Ward, he had three children: Edward Turriff, Donald and Douglas. With his second wife, Mary Morrison, he had one child: George. Edward died in 1977 and is buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.

Vaudry (family)

The Vaudry family came to the Eastern Townships in the mid-19th century when Hypolite Vaudry (1834-1905) moved to Shefford and later to Waterloo. Hypolite and his wife Martha Olive Craig (1841-1923) had four children; Mary, Alphonse, Frederick and Hermon. Dr. Mary Olive Vaudry (1870-1951) a graduate of McGill and Bishop's University, moved to Lennoxville in 1905 and persued a career in teaching at the Lennoxville Academy, Knowlton Academy, in Waterloo, Windsor and Sawyerville. Hermon Lloyd Merle Vaudry (1884-1948) came to Lennoxville in 1916 where he built greenhouses in order to sell fruits and vegetables at the Sherbrooke public market. In 1925, Hermon married Olive Craig Warren, descendant of settler John Savage (1740-1826). The couple had two children; Julia Helen Vaudry (1926-2015) and Frederick John Hermon Vaudry (1928-1991). Frederick took over his father's commerce and turned it into a flowershop in 1955. The Vaudry and Lloyd streets in Lennoxville were named after Mary and her father in 1991.

Riff, Frank

Frank Riff resided in both Durham and Ulverton, Drummond County during his life. He farmed and worked with his relation Moses A. Riff in the early twentieth century until he bought and ran an antique shop in Ulverton in later years. The antique shop in Ulverton was previously George Miller's general store. He is the descendant of William Riff, who was born in Germany and settled in Wickham East, Drummond County until his death in 1894.

Nina was born on 30 November 1921, and is the daughter of Samuel and Lily (Thornton) Bridgette. She married Dr. Fred Southcott on 25 May 1946.

Linda Phyllis Cronk was born 14 January 1949, the adopted daughter of Boyd Keith Cronk and Phyllis Bridgette. She obtained her nursing degree from the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children in 1970.

Carolyn Cronk was born 27 September 1945 in London, Ontario and is the daughter of Boyd Keith Cronk and Phyllis Bridgette. She grew up primarily in Port Hope, Ontario, where her father was a minister, and earned a BA from the University of Western Ontario. She later studied Speech Therapy at the University of Montreal.

Boyd Keith Cronk, known as Keith, was ordained as a minister early in life. He married Phyllis Maria Bridgette the 16 January 1943. Together they had two daughters: Carolyn Belle (b. 1945, London, Ontario) and Cynthia, who died shortly after birth. They then adopted a daughter, Linda. Later in his life Keith worked with at-risk youth.

Phyllis Bridgette was born 5 July 1903 and is the daughter of Albert and Anabella (Todd) Bridgette. She was educated at the Bulwer Model School and MacDonald College. She taught for a short time before training at the Montreal Homeopathic Hospital, receiving her RN in 1934 and a certificate in Public Health from McGill University in 1941. She married Boyd Keith Cronk on 16 January 1943. Together they had two daughters: Carolyn Belle (b. 1945, London, Ontario) and Cynthia, who died shortly after birth. They then adopted a daughter, Linda.

Doris was born 6 August 1898, in Birchton, Quebec. She is the daughter of Albert and Arabella (Todd) Bridgette. Doris was employed at the Bruck Silk Mills for 24 years and was an active member of the Mississquoi Historical Society as well as treasurer, secretary and publicity convenor for the Women's Institute from 1961 onward. She died 15 May 1976 at Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital in Cowansville.

Marjorie Bridgette was born on 12 November 1893 in Birchton, Quebec, and is the daughter of Albert and Arabella (Todd) Bridgette. Marjorie attended the newly opened MacDonald College, qualifying as a teacher in 1912. Sher first taught in Inverness, moving to Danville Academy in 1917, where the new principal was Cedric S. Douglas. They were married on 3 July 1920. Together they had two children, John Creighton and Robert Keith. Marjorie died on 21 September 1982 in Cowansville.

Samuel J. Bridgette was born 17 May 1877 and was the son of John and Maria (Orr) Bridgette. He married Lily M. Thornton 9 September 1908. Together they had five children: Pauline, Nina, Roberta, Freida, and Albert. Samuel was ordained as a minister in the Methodist church. Samuel died on 1 November 1970.

William S. Bridgette was born May 31, 1875 and was the son of John and Maria (Orr) Bridgette. His first marriage was to Myrtle Lindsay. His second marriage was to a woman named Elizabeth ? William died in 1973.

Georgie was born June 17 1875, (possibly June 15, 1876), and is the daughter of John and Maria (Orr) Bridgette. She married Wells Rogers (1880-1931) January 28, 1903. Together they had one known son William Wells Rogers. Georgie died May 11, 1945.

Alma Bridgette was born January 13, 1866, and was the daughter of John and Maria (Orr) Bridgette. She married Irving Cass (1872-1957) Together they had at least one son Lawrence Edward Cass. Alma died February 10, 1954.

Richard Bridgette was born 26 March 1863, and was the third child of John and Maria (Orr) Bridgette. He moved to New York where he was a businessman and was involved with the Masons for nearly 75 years. Richard married Margaret Tynan in 1913. Margaret died 8 October 1949, and Richard died 19 September 1962.

Arabella Todd, known as Bella, was born January 15, 1864. She is the second daughter of Alonzo and Susan (Luther) Todd. She married Albert Edward Bridgette and together they had three daughters Marjorie, Doris and Phyllis. Arabella died February 3, 1942.

Alonzo Todd was born in January 1833, and was the son of Elisha and Sally (Willard) Todd. Alonzo married Susan Minerva Luther January 29, 1862. Together they had five children Eva Lucinda, Arabella, Mary Jane "Jennie", Ernest, and Etta Fidelia. After Susan's death Alonzo re-married Nabbie (Rolfe Hodge?) in 1900. Alonzo died October 22, 1922 (Nabbie died July 16, 1920).

John Creighton Douglas, known as Creighton, was born 15 August 1924 in Cowansville, Quebec. He is the son of Cedric and Marjorie (Bridgette) Douglas. Creighton married Althea Cleveland McCoy, and died in 2006.

Clarence Tabor was born at the end of the nineteenth century. He was the husband of Ada Douglas, both of them living in Eureka California. Clarence was a prominent member in area politics. He died in 1969.

Ada Douglas was born in 1889 in Eureka, California. She was the daughter of George Carleton Douglas. Ada married Clarence E. Tabor. She died on 7 August 1969.

Bessie Kathleen Douglas was born on 19 August 1887, in East Farnham, Quebec. She was the daughter of William and Susan (Pearson) Douglas. Bessie was confirmed 14 June 1903 in St. James Church, Farnham. Notes on the file indicate that Sergeant Arthur Warren Youell might have been Bessie's fiancée. Arthur Warren Youell was born 25 August 1888. He was the son of George Warren and Alice J. Youell of Alymer Ontario. Arthur graduated with a B.A. in Science from the University of Toronto. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1918, at the age of 30 (service # 338011). He was posted in the Canadian Field Artillery, 8th Brigade. Arthur was awarded the Military Medal for bravery at Passchendaele, but died from wounds sustained while fighting on 12 November 1918. He is buried in Southampton (Hollybrook) Cemetery Hampshire U.K. During the war Bessie lived in Toronto, Ontario and worked for Ingersoll-Rand Canada Inc. It appears that Bessie never married and died in June 1982.

Anna Douglas was born on 25 March 1884 in East Farnham, Quebec. She was the daughter of William J. and Susan (Pearson) Douglas. Anna attended school becoming a French Specialist and teaching both in the Townships and Montreal. She married George Harley Moynan the 26 June 1929, settling on a farm outside Lennoxville. They had no children. Anna died the 18 June 1961.

Janet Dunlop Douglas was born on 29 April 1881, in Farnham, Quebec. She was the daughter of William and Susan (Pearson) Douglas. Janet married Edward Arthur Mellor on 15 August 1906. Together they had one son, Cedric Douglas Mellor. Near the end of her life, she lived in Victoria, British Columbia with her sister Bessie Douglas. She died 26 May 1967 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Victoria.

Gertrude Pendlebury Capsey was born on 6 September 1880 in the Mystic area. She was the youngest daughter of James and Mary (Douglas) Pendelbury. She married Henry Edward Capsey (d. 1950) and together they had eight children: Muriel, Hilda, Douglas, Gerald, Edith, Irene, Phyllis, and William. She was a member of St. James Anglican Church. She died on 4 January 1966 at Notre Dame du Rosaire Hospital.
