Biographical history
Soldier and politician Augustus Gugy was born in Trois-Rivières on 6 November 1796, the son of the Honourable Louis Gugy. From his marriages to Louise Duchesnay and Mary McGrath, he had a son and three daughters. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, he enlisted in the Canadian Fencibles and distinguished himself at the battle of Chateauguay. In 1822 he was called to the bar of Lower Canada; and from 1831 to 1838 he sat at the Legislative Assembly of the province as member for Sherbrooke, holding the seat till the 1837 rebellion. In 1838 he was appointed police magistrate of Montreal, and in 1841 Adjutant General of the Militia of Lower Canada. From 1848 to 1851 he again represented Sherbrooke in the Legislative Assembly, becoming head of the official opposition. In 1853, he was appointed Inspector and Superintendent of police at Montreal, but resigned the same year to retire to the estate in Beauport that he had inherited as seigneur in 1840. (From 1840 till the abolition of seignorial tenure in 1854, he was seigneur of Yamachiche, Rivière du Loup, Grandpré, Grosbois, and Dumontier.) He died at Beauport, near Quebec, on 11 June 1876.

It consists of a public notice from the office of the Adjutant General of Militia signed by A. Gugy (1845), a letter from His Excellence, the Government Administrator addressed to Lieutenant Colonel De Salaberry and signed by the Adjutant General of Militia, A. Gugy (1845), a diatribe against Lieutenant Colonel Gugy ([after 1841)]) and a lampoon signed by A. Gugy ([187-]).
