The Sherbrooke District Council of the Boy Scouts of Canada, first called the Sherbrooke Local Association of the Boy Scouts Association, was founded in 1912. The Association, which first belonged to the Eastern Townships District, became an independent district in 1947. As stated in the 1964 edition of the Policy, Organization and Rules of the Boy Scouts of Canada, the goal of the Boy Scouts movement is: "to develop good citizenship among boys by forming their character; training them in habits of observation, obedience, and self-reliance; inculcating loyalty and thoughtfulness for others; teaching them services useful to the public and handicrafts useful to themselves; and promoting their physical, mental, and spiritual development (rule 1)". The district has the following duties and powers: "to promote the Boy Scouts program in all its aspects within its area; to encourage and supervise the Boy Scout movement within its area and to interpret the principles, policies, practices and procedures of the Boy Scouts of Canada; to raise and control the funds of the district council; to promote harmonious co-operation with all other youth organizations recognized by the National Council; to register Scouts and to recommend scouters for appointment and groups charter; to suspend for cause any section, group, scout or scouter in its area, subject to an appeal from any suspension to the next senior council; to arrange examinations for, and the granting of, proficiency badges; to recommend scouts, scouters, and groups for decoration and awards; to make by-laws for the district and submit them to the next senior council; to establish, at the discretion of the district council, committees for the following purposes: Organization and Expansion, Volunteer Training, Health and Safety, Badge Examination, Camping, Finance; to furnish to the next senior council an annual report including a duly audited financial statement and such other reports as may be required by the next senior council; to interpret to the next senior council the needs of groups within its area; to notify the next senior headquarters of any change of address of district council officers; to perform the duties assigned under these rules and other duties assigned to it by the next senior council (rule 60)". The district is under the jurisdiction of the Quebec Provincial Council of the Boy Scouts of Canada and has under its jurisdiction Scout groups from Birchton, Bishopton, Bulwer, Bury, Coaticook, Cookshire, Dixville, East Angus, Huntingville, Lake Magog, Lennoxville, North Hatley, Sawyerville, Sherbrooke, and Waterville. The officers of the district council, elected at the annual meeting, are the president, past-president, vice-presidents, secretary, treasurer, and District commissioner. Committees are established as needed.
