Biographical history
Alfred Cecil Hale (a.k.a. Cecil) Bowen was born in Sherbrooke 21 March 1860, son of George Frederick Bowen and Eliza Jessie Wyatt. Cecil studied at the Sherbrooke Academy and Bishop's College School and early on took an interest in engineering, theatre and singing, studying the latter in Boston for a time. He was a member of the 53rd Sherbrooke Regiment and implicated in community organizations, such as the Boy Scouts. As part of his professional life, Cecil was involved in various railway construction projects in Nova Scotia (Spring Hill), Brazil, Cuba and Ontario. He also pursued gold and coal mining in Brazil (Barcellos Gold Mining), Argentina, and Newfoundland. Cecil married Minnie Hallowell in 1890 and they had two children: Rose Meredyth and Lloyd Hallowell. He died in 1935.

Scope and content
The series contains primary source material on the involvement of Cecil H. Bowen in the development of railroads, the mining industry, in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and in Sherbrooke theatre. It also gives information on World War I, the Fenian Raids, the Knights of Columbus, and Cecil H. Bowen's trip to Europe on a steamship in 1906. The series is comprised of the following files: Railroads ([1898?]-[1902?]), Mining (1888-1910), Military (1878-1925), Fenian Raids (1866-1898), Photographs ([ca. 1866]-[193-?]), Travels and Theatre (1879-[1906?], 1986), Knights of Columbus ([1925?]), Boy Scouts (1922-1923), Biographical documents (1875-1935), Correspondence ([1891?]-1930).
