    Biographical history

The Celtic Research Group was formed at the end of a course on Celtic mythology offered to senior citizens at Marianopolis College in Montreal. Participants in the course who were particularly interested in Scottish immigration to Canada decided to form the Group. The founding members were Isobel Loutit, Catharine Mackenzie, Helen St. John, Luella Martin, James Patrick, Doreen Patrick, Margaret Griffin, Olivia Gall, Charles Grant, and Gladys Hutley. The Group concentrated its research on Compton County in the Eastern Townships and more specifically on Hebridean immigrants to the Scotstown area. Its objectives were to find out why Scots emigrated and why they settled in Compton County; to obtain information on their life conditions at the time of the settlement; to follow the progress of some of the families; to interview some of the settlers' descendants; and to obtain photographs and pictures of people, churches, schools, and artefacts. In 1982, the Group received a grant from the Federal Government's New Horizons Program that greatly facilitated the members' work. The Group ceased its activities around 1988.

    Scope and content

The fonds contains source material on the Scottish emigration to the Eastern Townships. It consists of a four-volume unpublished study entitled Celts of Compton County; eight interviews with descendants of Scots settlers; a map showing the 'Pionneer Scotch Settlements in Compton County'; and a list of materials deposited with the Compton County Historical Museum Society by the Celtic Research Group. 'Celts of Compton County' includes photocopies of pictures, photographs, maps, press clippings, and old textual records. It contains the following series: Celts of Compton County ([1979?]), Interviews (1982-1985), and Material Deposited in the Compton County Historical Society (1989).
