Biographical history
The Cochrane Cemetery is located near the village of Compton on land that, over the years, has belonged successively to the Crown and Jesse Pennoyer, Benjamin Sleeper, and Matthew Cochrane. For many years, it lay in a state of neglect. In 1973, citizens of Compton decided to clean it up and in 1974 a committee was formed (Ronald S. Drew, Sydney J. Harrison, Iris Richert, Edna Huff, and Clarence Huff) with the following objectives: acquire the titles to the land known as 'the burying ground'; restore the cemetery and maintain it in good condition; collect funds to maintain the cemetery. The Cemetery was incorporated the same year. In 1985, the committee was disbanded and the responsibility for the upkeep of the Cemetery was handed over to the Compton Cemetery.
Custodial history
The fonds was donated in 1985 to the Compton County Historical Museum Society when the Committee disbanded in 1985 and was transferred to Bishop's University in 1989.
Scope and content
The fonds contains source material on the history of the Cochrane Cemetery and on the work of the restoration committee. It consists of documentary materials of various kinds, including photographs, press clippings, minutes, financial statements, list of persons buried in the Cemetery, correspondence, and photocopies of deeds of sale dating from 1802, 1803, 1864, and 1919. These materials are all gathered into a report in nine parts (Our work, Summary, Numerical list, Mailing #1, Mailing #2, Mailing #3, Final Mailing, Minutes of meetings).
