Biographical history
Stephen Mead was born in 1819 to William Mead (1762-1840) and Sarah Mead (née Smith; 1777-1835). He was the brother of Smith Mead (fl.1837-1839) and Sarah Smith Mead (1819-1870), among other full and half-siblings. He married Constance Mead (1840-1918) and together, they had the following children: Anna S./Leocadie Mead (1863-1949), Joshua Roberts Mead (1865-1944), Stella Baham Mead (1869-1957), and William Wesley Mead (1871-1904). He died in 1875.

The file contains primary source information on Stephen Mead from 1832 to 1853 in California, Vermont, and New Hampshire. It consists of letters written by Stephen to his sister, Sarah S. Mead; and his future brother-in-law, Martin C. Ferrin. The letter December 1-3, 1853 includes a message from Sarah S. Mead's niece, [Helen].
