    Biographical history

Daniel Thomas left Woodstock, Vermont to settle in Melbourne Township at the beginning of the 19th century. On 24 August 1835, he married Elizabeth Ann Armstrong, who came from Belfast, Ireland. They had five children: Daniel (1835), Samuel Simpson Wood (1837), Henrietta Maria (1839), Laura Ann (1843), and Charles Metcalfe (1847). Daniel Thomas had a notarial practice in Melbourne for many years and was held in high regard in the community, in particular in the field of education. He died in 1855 or 1856.

    Custodial history

The documents were donated to the archives in 1992 by Mr. and Ms. W.N. Coburn; Mr. Coburn is the nephew of the painter Frederick S. Coburn, whose mother (Laura Ann Thomas) was a daughter of Daniel Thomas Sr. The documents had been found in the Coburn home in Melbourne, mingled with documents relating to the activities of Daniel Thomas Jr. and William Hoste Webb (1824-1890). The latter sat in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada as representative for the constituency of Richmond and Wolfe and sat in the Legislative Council of the Province of Quebec for the Division of Wellington. Six additional documents were added to the fonds from an accrual of material for the F.S. Coburn fonds in 2013.

    Scope and content

The fonds contains source material on Daniel Thomas's professional activities, the lands he owned, and the settlement of the Melbourne region during the first half of the 19th century. It consists largely of notarized and legal deeds; correspondence; and maps of Clifton, Melbourne, and Westbury dating from the 1830s. The fonds is comprised of the following series: Correspondence (1816-1854), Notarized and Legal Deeds (1819-1875), Maps of Clifton, Melbourne, and Westbury ([1830?]), and Miscellaneous Documents ([18--]).
