Biographical history

Local historian Herbert Derick was born in Noyan, Missisquoi County, on 2 September 1916. He studied in Bedford before working in industry and commerce. He married Lucille H. George and together they had three children: Brian, Jane and John. At the beginning of the 1960s, Herbert moved to Lennoxville. From 1964 to 1980, he worked as Regional Industrial Commissioner for the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce of Canada. A member of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada, Derick for many years researched the history of the Missisquoi County and the pioneers of the Eastern Townships, accumulating a massive quantity of documentation. He died on 8 February 1994.

Scope and content

The fonds contains primary source material on the personal and professional activities of Herbert Derick. It also consists of material on various Derick family members and includes a genealogical manuscript. The fonds also contains material on other families and research on various topics and towns within the Eastern Townships, cemetery indexes, photographs, ledgers, and account books. The fonds is comprised of the following series; Herbert R. Derick (1916-1994), Derick family ([18--?]-1994), Other families (1816-[2003?]), Research (1827-[199-?]), Cemetery Indexes ([1958?]-1986), Ledgers (1848-1919), Account Books (1848-[1989?]), Family Bible ([18--?]), and Photographs ([18--?]-[19--?]).

The collection was donated in nine accessions (1987-1992) by Herbert Derick, and by his son Brian (1995, 1998, 2011, 2016).
