The series consists of diaries written by Joshua Levi Nichols during his adult life. The diaries were written in leather-bound books from 1859 to 1876, 1880 and 1881, and on loose sheets from 1903 to 1915. In 1973, Howard Eldridge completed the transcript of the day-to-day inscriptions of each diary, except the one from 1880 and the loose sheets. His widowed wife gave the transcriptions to the BCHS in 1981.
