The file contains primary source information on Martin C. Ferrin's education and enduring connection to Brownington Academy in Brownington, Vermont, from about 1827 to 1840. It consists of class notes; notes proclaiming Martin's academic excellence; a hair knot; notes, presumably from other Brownington Academy students, with kind messages addressed to Martin; English composition and grammar exercises; a publication entitled "Topics and References Design to Assist in the Study of Woodbridge's Universal Geography," (1834); a notebook for cursive penmanship exercises (1835); a statement of Martin C. Ferrin's account with A.L. Twilight (1835); a note dated December 5, 1835 deeming Martin qualified to instruct Elementary level reading, writing, and arithmetic; and an invitation to a Social Cotillon Party at Fessenden's Hotel in Wayland, Massachussetts on November 26, 1840.

The file contains primary source information on Martin C. Ferrin's marriage to his first wife, Sarah S. (née Mead) Ferrin, from 1843 to about 1881. It consists of their marriage certificate (1843) and a notebook containing recipes; notes regarding seamstress work; notes regarding purchases of household goods and accounts with sellers; and notes regarding labour performed. The notebook also contains loose documents, including a certificate of Martin's appointment as Notary Public in 1862; an estate inventory for an unknown individual (1860); a list of notes owing and their amounts and interest; a receipt from the Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Company (1884); and a receipt from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions for a donation by Martin on behalf of the Anglican Church and the Sab[bath] School (1882)

It consists of three diaries where he noted sales and purchases of goods, weather, social calls, work performed, and other daily observations. Each of the diaries also has accompanying receipts and other notes. The 1892 diary includes two strips of an earlier document, possibly dated 1850, that seem to have been used as a page marker within the diary.
