They also include rare pictures of John Austin Wheeler, his wife and children. Most of the negatives were kept in their original sleeves with identification and negative number.

The series consists of diaries written by Joshua Levi Nichols during his adult life. The diaries were written in leather-bound books from 1859 to 1876, 1880 and 1881, and on loose sheets from 1903 to 1915. In 1973, Howard Eldridge completed the transcript of the day-to-day inscriptions of each diary, except the one from 1880 and the loose sheets. His widowed wife gave the transcriptions to the BCHS in 1981.
