The collection contains source material on various topics related to the Eastern Townships in the ninetieth and twentieth centuries such as settlement, colonization, politic, military, economy, transport, communication, health and welfare, education, religion and culture. It consists mainly of schedules, obituaries, by-laws, insurance policies, certificates, photographs, maps, drawings, posters, cards, petitions, genealogies, diaries, scrapbooks, newspapers, letters, songsheets, land grants, reports, ledgers, minutes of meetings, notebooks and programmes. The collection is comprised of the following series: Settlement and Colonization ([18--]-Photocopied 1994), Politics (1965-1974), Military (1802-1988), Economy (1830-1987), Transport and Communications (1826-1990), Health and Welfare (1931-1949), Education (1854-1998), Religion ([18-?]-Photocopied 1993), Culture ([18-?]-1990).

The file consists of a photocopy of a book, Newport First Records, Province of Lower Canada, dated from 1800 to 1814, and four photocopied pages of clippings. The file contains the minutes of the meetings of the Associates and other inhabitants of the Township of Newport. It provides information on the development of Newport settlement, the grant made to Stephen Williams and his 40 associates on 25 September 1800, land distribution, the names of the grantees and the dates of their settlement, and some obituaries.

The file contains primary source information on land transactions concerning Hatley in 1823 and in 1872. It consists of a photocopy of a sale and conveyance by Ebenezer Hovey to Simon Kezar for the northwest quarter of lot 7, range 3 in Hatley Township, in 1823. Appended to the photocopy of the deed is a hand-drawn plan of the land concerned. It also consists of a receipt for a final mortgage payment received from Benjamin Burland by F.D. Gilbert in 1872, for part of lot 5, Range 1 and part of lot 7, Range 2 in Hatley.

The file contains primary source information relating to land in Barnston in 1849, 1862 and from 1874 to 1876. It consists of a photocopy of a letter written March 14, 1849 by [A. Sowen?] to Robinson Oughtred, Esq. regarding a property dispute concerning lot 6, range 11 in Barnston. It also consists of a complaint filed by William Locker Felton against Alexander Edson, Junior, for non-payment of a mortgage on the north quarter of lot 3, range 2 and the north half of lot 1, range 2 in Barnston, as well as a court summons for the same case. It also consists of a mortgage (1874) and mortgage and obligation (1876) by John Hunter, William Hunter, and Ann Lane Walker to Ernest Maloney for the north half of lot 10, range 2 and the north half of lot 11, range 2 in Barnston.

The file consists of two pamphlets, "Come and See The Eastern Townships" and "The Eastern Townships of Quebec: A Good Place to Live and Play". It also contains annual and quarterly meeting agendas for the years 1928 and 1929 and annual reports from 1913 until 1917 for the Eastern Townships Immigration Society and the Eastern Townships Associated Board of Trade. The file provides information on the advertising used to attract Europeans to the Eastern Townships, and on the Eastern Townships Immigration Society, which was an incorporated branch of the Eastern Townships Associated Board of Trade.

Item is a set of annual reports submitted at the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Eastern Townships Associated Boards of Trade and Eastern Townships Immigration Society on 20 February 1917. It consists of lists of officers for both groups, annual reviews for both groups, and financial statements for both groups.

The file contains source information on the life of Caroline Parsons Coombs (1818-1907) and her family's immigration and settlement experiences in Bury, Sherbrooke and Orford, Quebec. Caroline immigrated to Canada with her family in 1836. She married John Coombs in 1837. The file consists of a memorial booklet written by Eva A. Coombs, Caroline's grand-daughter.

The file contains primary source information about Jonathan Slater (ca 1816-1889) and his wife, Rebecca Walker (ca. 1818-1890) in Barnston from 1881 to 1896. It consists of an invoice addressed to Jonathan Slater, register extracts for their marriage and deaths, and Rebecca Walker's will. Rebecca Anglisa Walker was the daughter of Joseph Walker and Mary McCaw. Together, Jonathan Slater and Rebecca Walker had at least six children: Frances, Mary, Jane, Jonathan Henry, Emma, and Retinah.

It consists of a copy of "Samuel June Barrows: A Circuit Rider in the Humanities" by Paul U. Kellogg and a copy of an article by Michael M. Davis titled "A History of Lake Memphremagog Region," originally published in the Sherbrooke Record on March 21, 1964, which discusses the Barrows family's summer properties on Lake Memphremagog.

The lists are divided into urban polling-subdivisions and contain data such as electors' names, surnames, occupations and addresses.

The file consists of four diaries: one diary of a farmer from Lacolle, dated 1836-1839, divided up into three booklets; a photocopy of "The Farm Journal of P.H. Gosse from the Season of 1837"; "The Farmers' Manual and Complete Accountant", edited and compiled by J.L. Nichols and Co., dated 1895, filled out by Bonn Little ca. 1903, North Hatley; and Mr. Dufy's diary covering the years 1903-1909. The file provides information on the development of agriculture in the Eastern Townships. Many details are provided on the following subjects: weather forecasting, cattle breeding, transportation, health, and cultural and political events such as the Rebellion of 1837. The farmers' manual contains general information on farming accountancy and records of production.
