    Biographical history

    Minnie Henrietta Bethune Hallowell was born in Sherbrooke on 4 February 1861. She was the daughter of John Hallowell, a lawyer, and Helen Maria Clark. On September 10th, 1890, she married Cecil H. Bowen, son of George Frederick Bowen, and had two children, Lloyd H. and Rose Meredyth. Minnie Hallowell Bowen was active in various philanthropic, patriotic, religious, and literary organizations such as the Women's Auxiliary Missionary Society, the Sherbrooke Patriotic Association, the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, the Women's Conservative Association, the Canadian Authors' Association, and the Sherbrooke Choral Society. She published six books and booklets of poetry; she also wrote literary texts that were published in newspapers and periodicals. She used a few pen names: the Drum-Major, Jane of Brompton Road, and possibly Rapier. She died in Quebec City on August 1, 1942. Her funeral was held at Blake's Funeral Home (86 Queen Street) and St. Peter's Church, Sherbrooke, on August 4, 1942 and she was buried in the family lot at the Elmwood Cemetery in Sherbrooke.

    Scope and content

    The fonds contains source material mainly related to Minnie Hallowell Bowen's literary writings, community and political implicatons, and personal life at the turn of the 20th century. Many of her poems relate to local events, to the World Wars, and to Canadian and British politics. The fonds also provides information on the activities of Minnie's family members, including but not limited to: her husband Cecil H. Bowen, her son Lloyd H. Bowen, her daughter Rose Meredyth Bowen, Henry Bowen, Edward Bowen, Eleazar Clark, George Frederick Bowen, John Hallowell, William Bowen, Frank A. Bowen, Frederick Chamberlin Bowen, and Edward Hugh Bowen. The documents show their involvement mainly in the development of railways, in the mining industry, in the Armed Forces and Militia, in politics, in scouting, in church activities, and in social clubs and associations. Some documents are about the Fenian Raids, the Knights of Columbus, and the history of Sherbrooke.

    The fonds consists of mainly manuscripts, correspondence, photocopies of press clippings, articles, publications, photographs, diaries, prospectuses, and drawings. It is comprised of the following series: Literary Works and Other Writings (1883-1941), Involvement in the Canadian Flag Issue ([1887?]-1946), Personal Life ([1863-1865]-1943), Lloyd H. Bowen (1865, 1902-1995), Cecil H. Bowen ([1866?]-1935, 1986), Other Family Members (1801-1940), and History of Sherbrooke ([1836?]-1967), Family History ([1752?-200-?]), Obituaries and Other Clippings (1836-1943, 1964-1997), Other Photographs and Graphic Material (1840-1956), Miscellaneous ([1835-1904?]).

    Some documents exhibit severe water and mold damage.

    Immediate source of acquisition

    The documents were donated in 1998, 2007 and 2014 by Sally Bowen, and in 2016 by Catherine Constable, except for approximately 20 documents donated in 1980 by Phyllis Burczyk.

      The first processing and description of this fonds were done thanks to a grant from the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec (Soutien à la mise en valeur du patrimoine, sous-volet «archives privées»). The second processing, description and digitization were done thanks to a grant from the Bélanger-Gardner Foundation. New material was processed and described by Jazmine Aldrich, archival technician, in 2018 courtesy of funding received from Canadian Heritage.
