Biographical history
Norman Stewart Edson was born in Longueuil on May 11, 1879, son of Allen Edson and Mary Martha Jackson Stewart. His father, born in Stanbridge East, was a famous painter and the family lived in different places. They moved to Glen Sutton in 1886 and lived in a little hotel. In 1905, Norman Edson went to live in Everett, Washington where he opened a photograph studio. After some financial problems, he decided to come back to Glen Sutton and became an art teacher at Stanstead College. On June 7, 1909, he married Avis Eleanore Miltimore in Richford, Maine, and the family lived in Glen Sutton. When he was not teaching, he took many pictures of people and sceneries around Glen Sutton, and developed a unique technique of colorizing photographs, giving the impression that the pictures were in fact pieces of art. In 1919, he moved back to Washington State and settled in Burton (Vashon Island) in 1921, where he could see the most interesting scenic view that he would cherish for the rest of his life: the impressive mount Rainier. The couple had three children born in Canada and three others born in U.S.A. His wife died in April 1948 and in December of the same year, he remarried with Henrietta Jane English. Norman Edson became a well-known artist as he chose to become a painter, like his father. He died January 22, 1968 in Seattle, Washington and his gravestone depicts mount Rainier.
