Biographical history
Smith Mead was the son of William Mead (1762-1840) and Sarah Mead (née Smith; 1777-1835). He was the brother of Stephen Mead (1819-1875) and Sarah Smith Mead (1819-1870), among other full and half-siblings.

The subseries contains primary source information pertaining to Smith Mead from 1837 to 1839 in New Hampshire. It consists of three letters written by Smith to his brother, Stephen Mead; his sister, Sarah S. Mead; and his future brother-in-law, Martin C. Ferrin.
