Arthur Theodore Speid was born in 1882 in Montreal, Que. to Henry Speid (of Ardovie) and Helen Sievwright. Around 1893, the family moved to Lennoxville, Que. Arthur T. was well educated, a teacher at Bishop's University, served two terms as Mayor of Lennoxville, and involved in local theatre. He married Mary White in 1912 and had three daughters; Janet Speid-Motyer (1919-2012), Catharine (Speid) Bensley (1915-2009), and Lorna (Speid) Stewart. Around 1919, Arthur purchased Uplands from Canon Archibald Campbell and his wife Julia (nee Paddon) and remodelled it. He passed away in 1974, followed by Mary in 1979.
Janet Speid continued to live in the family home until 1987, when she and Catharine sold it to the Lennoxville-Ascot Historical and Museum Society and the Town of Lennoxville. Janet Speid married Arthur John Motyer in 1955 and they had two children; Dr. Michael Motyer and Gillian Allen (Motyer). Arthur Motyer was born in 1925 in Hamilton, Bermuda. He attended Mount Allison University and furthered his studies at Oxford. He returned to Canada, where he taught English and Drama at Bishop's University from 1950-70. While at Bishop's, he led the developement of Centennial Theatre. Arthur died the 23 June 2011.
