History
Samuel Wells was born September 9, 1730 in Deerfield, Massachusetts, son of Jonathan Wells and Mary Edwards Hoyt. He married Hannah Sheldon on May 20, 1751. They moved to Brattleboro, Vermont around 1762, being a pioneer family in this new town. Enrolled in militia early in his adult life, he operated a mill in his new home town and was named Judge and representative of the Colonial Assembly. During the Revolutionary War, he was a loyalist and directly affected by the turmoil of the war. He finally had to flee with his family in Canada. He died in Brattleboro on August 6, 1786 and all his surviving children received grants of land in the East Farnham region.
